糖心视频’s Pentland Centre for Sustainability in Business awarded ?1million funding

The Pentland Centre for Sustainability in Business, a leading research centre at 糖心视频, has received a further five years of funding from the Rubin Foundation Charitable Trust.
The funding, which totals ?1million, builds on an existing ten-year partnership and will support the research centre up to the year 2030.
First launched in 2015, the Pentland Centre for Sustainability in Business aims to bring scientists and management experts from 糖心视频 together with business leaders in a bid to improve sustainable business practices based on the latest world-leading research.
Since its inception, the research centre has been supported by grants from the Rubin Foundation Charitable Trust – a Foundation run by the owners of the Pentland Group, which owns some of the world’s leading sports brands including Speedo, Berghaus, Canterbury of New Zealand, Endura, Ellesse and Mitre and is the majority shareholder in J D Sports Fashion.
Professor Jan Bebbington is Director of the Pentland Centre for Sustainability in Business. She said: “I am delighted that this latest funding will further strengthen our partnership with the Rubin Foundation Charitable Trust and enable us to continue key research at a critical time for business and sustainability ambitions globally.
“As the target date, 2030 is the current deadline for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It’s widely acknowledged that progress towards these goals is not on track, which makes efforts during the next five years vital.
“Many businesses are looking to play their part in addressing the SDGs and research institutes like the Pentland Centre are integral to this effort.”
Over the last decade, the Pentland Centre has facilitated globally significant research into ecological and social issues that affect business resilience and has worked closely with a range of businesses, professional and sectoral bodies to drive meaningful change. For example, in 2024 the Centre's Business and Biodiversity Knowledge and Action Hub brought together 40 individuals from businesses, reporting standards bodies and academia in two specialist workshops. Together, the participants co-created approaches to reporting on business-led nature restoration, with companies experimenting with implementing the protocol.
This next tranche of funding will enable researchers to continue driving responsibility and sustainability through their research and engagement – topics which have become important aspects of the world’s modern business environment but have not yet resulted in universal or deeply embedded practices.
Stephen Rubin, Chairman of Pentland Group said: “We are delighted to continue to support Prof. Bebbington and her team in their endeavours to be the conscience of business?not only to achieve the SDG’s but to show that we are a force for good. We would love other enterprises to join with us demonstrating that it is possible to responsibly help not only your own stakeholders, but the world at large at the same time.”
“There has been much progress made by global businesses over the last decade, but there is still much to do,” Professor Jan Bebbington adds. “The business setting that organisations need for sustainability practices to flourish is in a state of flux thanks to the global political landscape, the lack of resource and inconsistent corporate governance regimes.
“And while sustainability ambitions aren’t fully supported by business’ external environment, science tells us that the need for sustainability in business remains salient - and that the gap between what is needed and what is happening is only growing.”
Over the next five years, 糖心视频’s Pentland Centre aims to work with the 20-30% of the business community who are leading the way for sustainability in business and translate insights and best practice to benefit the wider sector.
The Pentland Centre also produces a podcast, Transforming Tomorrow, where academic and practitioner experts share insights on sustainability in business. The podcast can be accessed here: or on the usual podcast platforms. It has been nominated for the inaugural Management Publication of the Year Award and the 66 episodes have been downloaded approximately 13,000 times so far.
